COLORFUL SEA CREATURES

A pretty brilliant looking idea is being used to examine the sea creature anatomy. Japanese artist Iori Tomita dissolves the flesh of piranha, seashores and turtles and injects colorful dye into their bones. The jars filled with the beautifully colored translucent skeletons are set for display in 2011.

UNDERBELLY PAINTING TUNNELS

An elusive pirate treasure of contemporary art

An abandoned subway chamber under Manhattan was illegally opened for a year from 2009 to allow 103 select artists to paint one night each. After, the original entrance to the station was removed and it was sealed off from the world. The Underbelly Project is an urban art experiment with an attempt to sabotoge the commercialism that has come over much of the street art scene.

According to The NY Times, “many of the contributors are significant figures in both the street art world and the commercial trade that now revolve around it.” The project’s curators, Workhorse and PAC, wanted to get as far as possible from the over night industry of the conventional art world. They explained their motivation to a reporter from The Sunday Times:

“People were going out and literally sawing walls in half to steal Banksy pieces. Electrical panels were being ripped off leaving live wires exposed that had Shepard Fairey stencils on them. It was commercialism at its worst. Early in the street-art years, I relished the ability to feel like I was my own island. The Underbelly was our way of feeling like we were an island again. We finally had a space in the world that collectors couldn’t contaminate. A space that couldn’t be bought.”

The artists worked for four hours each and weren’t allowed in and out supply runs due to the danger of getting caught and racking up serious criminal charges. The art itself has been well received, but commentators at Gothamist hint that it may already be gone; claiming that other NY street artists have entered the station and destroyed the work.

Whether left as a time capsule treasure for future generations to discover or ultimately temporary due to vandalism and decay, the Underbelly Project is certainly a curious one with the entirety of it’s purpose underlying the stealth of these incredible works of art.

These wishes have led to collaborative initiatives with far-reaching impact.”

This beautifully shot timelapse video was filmed in Paris a year ago. Absolutely hypnotizing, it’s a must see for the creative mind.

2 GIRLS 1 INSTALLATION

DORA BUDOR and MAJA ČULE are a Brooklyn based artist/design duo with Eastern European orgins. Cheeky and freaky, these young, progressive ladies create playful mixes of lewd taboos, everyday vices, and iconic imagery. Out of the competing 20 best designers worldwide, D&M were rewarded with the New Visual Artist Award by American Print magazine.

If you still need proof of the misses salacious creativity, read their very personal story below:

  • DORA was a rebellious teenager growing up in eastern Europe, surrounded by stacks of chicken pate, folk music and bald-headed men with all hair on their back. Not knowing how this would influence her future career, she met MAJA over speed-dating table where she answered correctly on question what is the meaning of life and stopped her from stealing a plastic chair for her collection. She hardly recognized MAJA at design school few years after because she was wearing bear head as she was a very pretentious fashion victim.
  • MAJA grew up travelling around eastern European Youth Tennis Centres, dreaming of becoming a star tennis player. She spent all her free time punching tennis balls and making collage decorations for weddings in suburban party halls. Not knowing how this would influence her future life, she went for a speed dating session, where she met DORA who impressed her with her origami skills by making the little salt and pepper holders out of napkin. MAJA decided to kiss the tennis racquet goodbye. She hardly recognized DORA at design school few years after because DORA was wearing a rabbit suit as she was a very pretentious fashion victim.

HI STEP IT BITCHESSSSS AND HOOF IT!!

Can you get with this?  Would you rock it?  I think i’d feel like a centaur just a lil’ bit….

For many years, Iris Schieferstein has worked with dead animals as raw material for her pieces of art. She joins the fragments together to new creatures and thus gives a new face to death. No matter, if her arrangements follow paintings of the great masters of art or if the joined objects turn out to be whole words – her work always gives evidence of aesthetic intutition and her inclination to subtle enterntainment.
The earlier you die – the longer you are dead.
