INFINITY LIBRARY?

This project must begin with an explanation of what ‘old school’ and ‘new school’ are to the designer Thomas Mills – simply: ‘old school’  is things that take more than a few seconds to access, which are books and films, etc, and ‘new school’ is the internet, magazines, text messages. This project encapsulates the ‘old school’ style, more involved library of items surrounding the person accessing it. This circle stands 246cm tall, made entirely from hand-cut plywood.

As you sit within the cradle, it rocks gently back and forth. Don’t get you’re roll on all the way, or you’ll probably do a revolution. This library can hold its own weight in books, the cushioned seat a nod to the futuristic furniture found in Stanley Kubrick films, especially 2001. Reading lamps are placed for reading in the most obvious manner, while lights placed around the circumference act as a clock, timers changing the brightness of them to its highest at the equinox of the day, dimmed to nothing at midnight. Concept that makes you go ‘hmmmmmmmmm????’

Thomas Mills has a disclaimer that the structure is for sale for £6000 ($9,600), but he will not ship it. Instead, if you live abroad and would like to have your own, homie would love for you to fly him out and make one for you straight up….hmmmmmmmmm…..Buy one up!

PHOTO AND ROBOTO

Save that shroom snack! Inspiring a momentary psychedelic trip, each of Johan Thornqvist’s illustrations induces a small dose of fantasy. Drawing mostly over real photographs, his art adds dreamy qualities to even the most mundane snapshots.

I’d love any of these as a canvas for Christmas. Especially the last two.
Hint hint ma mère, are you reading this?

UNDERBELLY PAINTING TUNNELS

An elusive pirate treasure of contemporary art

An abandoned subway chamber under Manhattan was illegally opened for a year from 2009 to allow 103 select artists to paint one night each. After, the original entrance to the station was removed and it was sealed off from the world. The Underbelly Project is an urban art experiment with an attempt to sabotoge the commercialism that has come over much of the street art scene.

According to The NY Times, “many of the contributors are significant figures in both the street art world and the commercial trade that now revolve around it.” The project’s curators, Workhorse and PAC, wanted to get as far as possible from the over night industry of the conventional art world. They explained their motivation to a reporter from The Sunday Times:

“People were going out and literally sawing walls in half to steal Banksy pieces. Electrical panels were being ripped off leaving live wires exposed that had Shepard Fairey stencils on them. It was commercialism at its worst. Early in the street-art years, I relished the ability to feel like I was my own island. The Underbelly was our way of feeling like we were an island again. We finally had a space in the world that collectors couldn’t contaminate. A space that couldn’t be bought.”

The artists worked for four hours each and weren’t allowed in and out supply runs due to the danger of getting caught and racking up serious criminal charges. The art itself has been well received, but commentators at Gothamist hint that it may already be gone; claiming that other NY street artists have entered the station and destroyed the work.

Whether left as a time capsule treasure for future generations to discover or ultimately temporary due to vandalism and decay, the Underbelly Project is certainly a curious one with the entirety of it’s purpose underlying the stealth of these incredible works of art.

AVANT GARDE GRANNY

Raphaëlle Hlimi‘s eyewear is a covetable collection of avant-garde and granny chic. Hlimi, who earned her stripes interning at such labels as Christian Dior and Emilio Pucci, knows how to craft a pair of eye candy.

Pastel yarn, gold chains and multi-colored baubles decorate the frames of each pair, some fully going g-ma and some verging on a more geek-chic look.

The colors on these remain subtle, letting the layered beads and wrap-around yarn take the spotlight.

The perfect accessory to add a subtle quirkiness to any plain Jane outfit!

The structured ready to wear designs featured in the photos can also be found as full collections at Raphaëlle Hlimi.

JR WINS 2011 TED PRIZE

Congratulations to French artist JR for winning the 2010 Ted Prize!

A little about the TED Prize:

“The TED Prize is designed to leverage the TED community’s exceptional array of talent and resources. It is awarded annually to an exceptional individual who receives $100,000 and, much more important, “One Wish to Change the World.” After several months of preparation, s/he unveils his/her wish at an award ceremony held during the TED Conference. These wishes have led to collaborative initiatives with far-reaching impact.”

This beautifully shot timelapse video was filmed in Paris a year ago. Absolutely hypnotizing, it’s a must see for the creative mind.

Treat yourself.

EL MAC

“The Mac” is a heavy title to take. You gotta be stealthy as fuck to create an illusion and evade the judgements of your intentions. Master the manip and become the king of schemes.

El Mac lives up to his self-proclaimed name. In this video, he paints a wall in Singapore and doesn’t get taken away by the po who stop to check out his public art work. Obvious yet elusive, the title fits!

Mac’s new mural on 10th ave and 26th street in Chelsea. I dig it!
